WorldWide TEFL – FAQ’s

Q. I’m 18 years old and I spent 2 months in Thailand. I love the country and would like to stay longer and work for a living. Could I become a teacher?
A. There are no real minimum ages, but 18 might be a bit young. You should be able to teach adults in business classes and therefore you just need some life experience. Besides that: in Thailand you must have at least a Bachelor Degree in order to obtain a Teacher’s License. So, indirect, the Thai government sets a minimum age of 22-23 years.

Q. I’m TEFL qualified and I just need a job. How can you help me?
A. In our program we have the option: “Guaranteed Job and Work Permit” for qualified people. The program includes: a course, Thai language and culture, we will take care of the teachers’ license and the work permit. All you have to do, is produce the necessary paperwork like: passport, visa, medical certificate, photo’s and BA/MBA

Q. I’m a Philippino, so not Native English. What are the chances of finding a teaching job in Thailand?
A. Being an Asian English teacher might cause some problems in finding a proper teaching job. Most schools are looking for Native English speaking teachers from UK, Aus and/or NZ. English speaking Asian teachers’ chances in finding an equivalent job are pretty small and even if you can find a job, the salary is less than a Native colleague.

Q. Is your TEFL certificate only valid in Thailand?
A. A TEFL certificate is valid all over the world. TEFL means Teach English as a Foreign Language and the TEFL techniques give you the possibility to teach English without using the mother tongue of your students.

Q. I would like to teach in Thailand, but I don’t speak Thai. Is that a problem?
A. That’s no problem. Using the TEFL techniques, you don’t need any knowledge of the Thai language, but knowing some basic Thai makes teaching and understanding slightly easier. Don’t be afraid, while teaching you’ll pick up the basics pretty quick.

Q. What are the requirements to join your program?
A. To join our program there are no real requirements. In order to work as a teacher in Thailand, the government and most of the schools require the following: minimum age 20, maximum age up to 60, in possession of at least a Bachelor Degree (of any kind), a criminal back ground check, a passport with at least 6 months validity. In possession of a non-immigrant B visa is an advantage as well as being a native speaker of English, but both last requirements are absolutely NOT NECESSARY.
